Dryer Vent Cleaning: DIY or Hire a Professional?

A clothes dryer is a wonderful invention that can save you the difficulty of hanging clothes out on the clothesline. However, if your dryer is improperly maintained, that wonderful gadget can start a fire that could damage your home or even threaten your life. While most homeowners will concede that this task is important, they may not do it properly or even do it at all. In the United States, over $35 million is lost due to fires caused by clogged dryer vents every year, and five deaths are caused by these preventable fires.

Whether you live in Las Vegas, Nashville or New York City, dryer duct maintenance is not a job that you can put off indefinitely. The safety of your family and your home is at stake every time you turn on the dryer. This is one job that needs to be done right.

Many people feel that paying a professional to do something as simple as cleaning out a bunch of lint is just a waste of money. However, with so many new homes built with the dryer centrally located in the home, cleaning out a dryer vent has become more complicated over the years.

Even if the dryer vent system is easy to reach, there are still plenty of reasons to call a professional to take care of your dryer duct cleaning. First, professional dryer duct cleaning services have all the tools to do this job quickly and efficiently. Rather than spending a couple hours on a Saturday morning moving the dryer, disconnecting the hose and getting lint everywhere, you can call a professional. With the right tools and professional know-how, he may be done with the job in less than an hour. You will be spared the dusty task of breathing lint and having to sweep and vacuum the mess.

Second, by doing a thorough job cleaning out your dryer vent, the cost of professional dryer vent services will save you money. When your dryer is working unimpeded by wads of lint, it will work more efficiently. Since your clothing will dry more quickly, you will quickly recoup the money spent on a professional cleaning job by lower utility bills.

Third, professional dryer duct cleaning services understand how a well-designed, properly maintained dryer vent system should work. Many homeowners may clean out the vent but forget to check the outer wall damper and the duct connections to the dryer. All of these components must be working properly and clean before your dryer is safe to use.

While cleaning out your dryer vent is a job that some homeowners can do themselves, paying a professional to do it will give you the peace of mind that your dryer is working exactly as it should be.

  1. I can see how hiring a professional would be good. Dryers nowadays are so fancy and high-tech, I don’t think I could clean it out myself. I can’t even remember the last time the dryer vents were cleaned, so thanks for the reminder.
